Hello vastness of the internet!
I’m not going to lie and pretend that I’m back. I wish I could but the practicalities of life like finding a new job and making sure I remember to eat keep getting in my way of being gloriously creative.
HOWEVER
This is my blog. I pay an annual fee to feel somewhat in control and appropriately like a writer, and occasionally things come up that prompt an outpouring of words from my psyche that I simply cannot ignore it. This was one of those times.
As I think everyone is aware, I am a liberal as fuck Michigander. We, along with many other states, are currently in the midst of state elections for governor, senators, judges, and so many more. (PLEASE VOTE) Unfortunately, recently I came across a GOP campaign ad in Ohio where the estranged mother of the Democratic candidate endorsed Dr. Acton’s opponent and called her daughter a liar. It has since come to [at least my] light that the candidate and her birth parent were estranged because of horrific trauma inflicted on Dr. Acton in childhood that her biological parent unfortunately did not protect her from. There are many, many news sites that have covered this and provided the appropriate amount of investigative due diligence that I am unable to provide.
Let me be clear, Vivek Ramaswamy did a deplorable thing and he should be ashamed of his actions.
But there are more horrific acts to come!
Some Republicans with a soul and shred of human decency in their hearts justifiably spoke out against Ramaswamy and his actions. They said that what he did was despicable and a step too far. And in waded the Vice President of my country to say that he couldn’t tell you if weaponizing the endorsement of a woman who failed in protecting her child from being raped was wrong, but he could tell you what definitely was: other Republicans not ignoring it and focusing on winning.
Look, I have been outspoken on how much I hate the Trump administration and how delicious my dream of seeing the entire cabinet behind bars for treason is. But this? This was a step too far. So I engaged in democracy while I still can and emailed my elected officials and sent the VP an email. And while I am a little concerned that the NSA will either open or expand upon a file in my honor, I couldn’t not speak up.
And I’m proud of myself. It is a teeny, tiny ripple in the pond of resistance, but the children in France are being shot and strangled while they protest for what they think is right. I couldn’t send an email? Be so serious.
So, to anyone who comes across this post, I am sharing the letter I sent to the vice president of my country. Unfortunately, I am now receiving texts from the administration and there doesn’t seem to be an opt-out button. But may this be the worst consequence I experience, having Trump’s scowling portrait sent to my phone like the worst unsolicited dick pic in history.
Enjoy and remember that rest is resistance.
Dear Mr. Vice President,
I am writing today because your comments regarding the gubernatorial race in Ohio are too reprehensible to ignore.
I have not been quiet about how ashamed I am of my country at this time in history, with an Executive cabinet full of people who embody disgraceful beliefs and attempt to enact terrifying edicts. However, I feel it is important to remind you that you don’t just represent the citizens of this country who voted for you. Despite my wishes, you represent the United States of America to the world and you theoretically are acting in the best interest of all of her citizens, including the ones who dislike you. It has been bad enough seeing the administration you belong to dismantle the Constitution and treat my fellow people, citizens and visitors alike, with contempt and disrespect. I truly believe that this period of history will go down as one of my country’s darkest and the rest of the world is justifiably upset with the actions your party and our current government is currently taking.
However, this was a bridge too far.
You are one of the highest placed members of your party. To essentially shame other Republicans who compassionately spoke out against a fellow party member for such an egregious act of attempting to discredit a rival in a protected election by invoking a time of extreme trauma is a display of inhumane depravity which, quite frankly, dismays me to my core.
I wish to reiterate that you should want every citizen in the country that you represent to thrive, no matter what their party affiliation is. That is what public service used to mean. Nonetheless, no actions on your part since ascending to the Vice Presidency have made me feel that you and the administration you serve truly appreciate that honor or have the capacity to shoulder that burden.
So I will speak to you in the self-serving language that you seem to embody. You are the parent of children the age that candidate Dr. Amy Acton was when she was raped. Not assaulted, not attacked, not offended; raped. You speak an alarming amount about the importance of faith in a county where the separation of church and state is supposed to be protected by its enshrinement in our Constitution. How do you presume your morals stand up to that? Do you think that your children will be proud of seeing their father minimize the trauma of someone at this age when they are old enough to understand what being a Vance entails? Are you somehow so delusional to think that your words and actions on this situation, amongst so many other choices, will not be brought up when you seek a reward after death?
I realize you won’t see this. I apologize to the intern or secretary who has to read and archive this to ensure that there is no threat being made against the Vice President. I assure you; there is not.
I too have morals. They guide me in my beliefs and actions every day. I simply wish that yours could guide you toward the smallest amount of compassion and mercy towards, again, a citizen in the country that you theoretically love and wish to improve.
The bare minimum of that would be to be appropriately appalled and outspoken about violations of basic human decency.
Hoping for a better future,
